Diary: Berlin, Germany - Reunions and Reflections
Berlin, a city that was once just a name on a map, now holds memories of reuniting with a friend from my Gap Year. The mix of excitement and apprehension filled me as I wondered if our bond would still be as strong. Settling into Berlin, I found that our friendship had endured, but also evolved.
My friend's welcome made me feel at home as she shared her life and friends with me. Her beautiful artwork, a cherished gift, now holds a place in my heart and soon, my future home. Her stories are hers to tell, and I can only hope that others will have the privilege of hearing them from her someday.
Yet, despite the warmth of our reunion, I couldn't shake the feeling that Berlin might not be the place for me. Biking through the city's diverse neighborhoods was a freeing experience, but there were moments that left me feeling unwelcome. Still, I'm open to giving Berlin another chance.
The highlights of my trip included biking through the city, a peaceful picnic by the lake, the community celebration of a wedding, and the vibrant music scene. These experiences reinforced my desire to live in a place where biking and walking are the norm, and where the community spirit is similar to the lively events I experienced in Berlin.
I really can't forget the wedding that I attended in Berlin. It brought back memories of Senegal where everyone came together and danced. Even though I can't dance at all, they insisted I join their circle, and the sense of community that Fato Giba was around amazed me and how uplifting it was. The wedding was a beautiful event that left a lasting impression on me.
I could talk all about the wedding, but my friend's music event we went to made me smile and feel warm inside. Even though I do not know the language they were singing in, the feeling all of them had when they came outside after and sat around and sang once the venue closed was truly special. The mix of the older generation with the younger generation, singing the same songs, felt like a scene from a movie. Even though I did not know the music, they gave me a little instrument to shake, and it was a wonderful experience to be included and to make it a whole group activity. Even remembering the feeling now as I write about it brings a smile to my face.
Looking back on my time in Berlin, I'm grateful for the memories created, the moments shared with my friend, and the cultural experiences that will stay with me. As I contemplate a return to Berlin, I'm eager to explore the city's nightlife and experience its fascinating history through bike tours. Until next time, Berlin!
