How did I get into sewing?

When I was little I loved to watch my grandma sew, crochet and knit. I would sit on the couch next to her and wait until she fell asleep so I would try and copy what she was doing. She would always find out because there were hole and gap in her towel or scrubby she was making. After awhile my grandma decided to teach me how to knit and crochet, but by that point I had my eye on sewing. My fascination with sewing started when my grandma started to make clothes for me. I wanted to know how to make and design my own clothing and be able to tailor it to fit me since I’m 5’-1”. I watched my grandma sew for hours on end. She noticed I was watching her like I watched her knit and crochet. So, she decided to teach me how to sew before she went back to Canada so I would not hurt myself trying for the first time on my mom’s sewing machine. Now whenever my Grandma visits, we create a new project to work on together. It’s our thing to do together!

How did these bags come about?

I started making bags to help raise funds for a research trip in Costa Rica to study leaf cutter ants. The research of these ants helped create four new antibiotics just last year. The program is to connect students with scientists to help inspire and promote the field of research….and I was inspired! Last summer I raised funds to study Bioinformatics in a field research immersion program at the University of Georgia in Monteverde, Costa Rica. This summer I will be raising money for my Gap Year and for future fellows. I also donate my bags to my school supply drive in my community.
